TROPICAL STORM MAYMAY, ENHANCED HABAGAT BROUGHT HEAVY RAINS

TROPICAL STORM MAYMAY (International Name Kujira), ENHANCED HABAGAT BROUGHT HEAVY RAINS, TRIGGERED FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES IN LUZON.
On August 4, 2026, a low-pressure area west of Luzon developed into Tropical Cyclone Maymay and intensified into a tropical storm on August 5. When TS Maymay made landfall over Ilocos Sur, the enhanced habagat has also affected the western portions of Luzon.
Tropical Cyclone Dolphin, located northeast of the Philippines, further strengthened the habagat, prolonging strong wind gusts and heavy rain from August 7-9.
These 5-day (Aug 06-10, 2026) rainfall totals have exceeded 50% of the monthly average, with Baguio City exceeding a month’s worth of rain. This extreme rain event is consistent with El Niño conditions, where above‑normal rainfall is usually observed over the western parts of the country from July to September.
