FIELD READY!: DOST-PAGASA Recognized Thirty New Hydrologists
As flooding continues to pose a recurring threat whenever monsoons and typhoons strike the country, the need to effectively understand, manage, and mitigate its risks has become increasingly urgent. The more we understand the nature and behavior of floods, the better equipped society becomes to anticipate their impacts, strengthen preparedness, and protect communities.
In response to this, DOST-PAGASA recognized 30 new field-ready hydrologists, from various divisions, regions, and international WMO RA V fellows from Fiji and Papua New Guinea, during the Hydrologist Training Course 2026 Closing Ceremony held at PAGASA Regional Training Centre on 26 August 2026.
The new batch of hydrologists completed a total of 880 hours for both theoretical and on-the-job training exposing them to actual operations such as streamgaging, hydrological and flood forecasting, maintenance of hydrological facilities and equipment, and preparation of operational reports.
The Deputy Administrator for Research and Development Dr. Marcelino Q. Villafuerte II, and Deputy Administrator for Administration and Engineering Services Ms. Shirley J. David conveyed their congratulations to the graduates as they delivered their inspirational messages encouraging them to face the challenge of making the actions towards the threat of flood be at household level.
DOST-PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando stresses the need of the country for new hydrologists that are “dedicated, innovative and deeply committed to public service” as he quoted in his Keynote Address. Moreover, Engr. Hilton T. Hernando also graced the closing ceremony with his presence as the guest of honor, sharing inspiring stories during his time as an HTC trainee himself.
The ceremony also highlights the committed principle of the agency in producing highly competent personnel capable of providing quality hydrological products and services in support of national development, disaster risk reduction, and public safety.
