Eyes on the sky: DOST-PAGASA unveils Iloilo S-Band Radar, breaks ground for new Iloilo synoptic stat
A NEW EYE IN THE SKY
On 06 March 2026, the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) marked a significant leap forward in the country's weather modernization program with the inauguration of the Iloilo S-Band Radar Facility and the groundbreaking of the new Iloilo Synoptic Station.
The ceremony was attended by key officials from DOST, DOST-PAGASA, local government units, and partner stakeholders, reflecting a strong convergence of science, technology, and governance in advancing community resilience. Present were DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., DOST Undersecretary Maria Teresa De Guzman, DOST-PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando, DOST Region VI Regional Director Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, CAAP representative Engr. Roberto B. Montelijao, OCD representative Atty. Melissa Bañas, and local leaders from Iloilo, including Hon. Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu and Iloilo Provincial Board Member Rolly Distura. Also in attendance were PAGASA Deputy Administrators Shirley J. David and Roy A. Badilla, Visayas PRSD Chief Alfredo F. Quiblat Jr., Southern Luzon PRSD Chief Lilian Guillermo, and Mindanao PRSD Chief Anianita Fortich.
MODERNIZATION IN ACTION
Standing tall at the PAGASA Iloilo Complex Station in Brgy. Buntatala, Iloilo City, the newly inaugurated dual-polarimetric Doppler radar is a powerful addition to the country's weather monitoring network, strengthening observation capabilities across Western Visayas and nearby provinces.
Equipped with high-resolution, near real-time monitoring capabilities, the radar enhances the tracking of heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and tropical cyclones, enabling more timely and accurate weather forecasts and warnings.
More than a technological milestone, the event underscores the vital role of science working hand in hand with communities. With the Iloilo S-Band Radar now operational and the new synoptic station set to rise, Western Visayas is better equipped with the tools, data, and partnerships needed to strengthen disaster preparedness and build more resilient communities.
These milestones reflect DOST-PAGASA's continued commitment to expanding and modernizing its nationwide monitoring network while improving the delivery of reliable public weather services through state-of-the-art infrastructure and strong collaboration with local government units and partner agencies.
