Strengthening Climate Resilience: FrostRiskPH in Action
The project titled “Risk Assessment of Frost Events in Benguet, Philippines” (FrostRiskPH), implemented by DOST-PAGASA and funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP), successfully conducted the Consensus Workshop on Frost Risk Classification in Benguet, Philippines on 22 April 2026 in Buguias, Benguet.
The workshop marks a key step toward developing a validated, science-based, and locally grounded frost risk classification system for Benguet Province. Through the FROST-PH tool hands-on sessions, participants actively engaged with frost data and contributed to validating indicators that reflect actual on-the-ground conditions. The outputs of this activity will support the development of advisories, risk maps, and decision-making tools for farmers and local government units.
Frost may not always receive the same level of attention as other hazards, yet its impacts on crops, livelihoods, and local economies can be significant. As emphasized by Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando, Administrator of DOST-PAGASA, initiatives like this are essential in addressing these often-overlooked risks.
Moreover, effective frost risk communication must be interactive and participatory, grounded in shared learning and collaboration. As highlighted by Dr. Joseph Q. Basconcillo, Project Leader and Career Scientist I, “Lahat sama-sama, walang maiiwan.” The FROST-PH initiative continues to bridge science and communities through inclusive and meaningful risk communication.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our valued partners and distinguished guests from DOST-PAGASA, led by Dr. Nathaniel Servando, together with Dr. Joseph Basconcillo, Project Leader of the FrostRiskPH Project; to the Department of Science and Technology–Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), headed by Regional Director Dr. Nancy A. Bantog; and to the Department of Agriculture–Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) Agriculture Program and Coordinating Office, represented by Mr. Lito Mocati. We also gratefully acknowledge the messages from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), especially Officer-in-Charge Ms. Beverly Mae N. Dela Cruz, represented by Mr. Nhikerr Morota, and the Chair of the NRCP-Earth and Space Sciences Division, Dr. Betchaida D. Payot.
