Better Tropical Cyclone Hazard Modelling and Assessment
Through the Strengthening Institutions and Empowering Localities Against Disasters and Climate Change (SHIELD) Program supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Australia, DOST-PAGASA and Geoscience Australia conducted a technical workshop from April 27 to 30, 2026 at the PAGASA Central Office to strengthen the country’s ability to simulate and assess tropical cyclone hazards.
The activity was attended by PAGASA Deputy Administrator Dr. Marcelino Q. Villafuerte II, together with scientists from Geoscience Australia Dr. Nicole Allen and Mr. Liang Hu. Experts from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Dr. Julian O’Grady and Dr. Raymond Cohen, also joined online and shared insights on storm surge modelling.
Bringing together scientists and technical experts, the four-day event reviewed the latest modelling results, checked how well past events were represented, and discussed how future climate conditions can be included in simulations. It also included training and discussions on how storms affect people and structures, and the use of local wind adjustments.
