Stronger Flood Preparedness Through DOST-PAGASA–Taguig Collaboration
A significant step toward enhancing flood preparedness and disaster resilience was taken as DOST-PAGASA and the City Government of Taguig formally sealed their partnership during the ceremonial memorandum of agreement (MoA) Signing held at the New Taguig City Hall on June 4, 2026.
The partnership supports the implementation of the “Development of Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System (FFEWS) for Greater Metro Manila and the Surrounding Provinces of the Laguna Lake Complex for Disaster Mitigation” project, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), aimed at strengthening flood forecasting capabilities and early warning services for vulnerable communities.
DOST-PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando, Deputy Administrator for Operations & Services Engr. Roy A. Badilla, and Hydro-Meteorology Division Chief Engr. Socrates F. Paat Jr. graced the event alongside City Mayor Maria Laarni L. Cayetano, CDRRMO Head Dr. Luis M. Sy Jr., and other local officials, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the city's flood preparedness, disaster risk reduction, and resilience efforts.
In his message, Dr. Servando emphasized the importance of strong partnerships with local government units, combined with reliable flood forecasting and early warning systems, especially as rainfall patterns become increasingly unpredictable and urban areas continue to grow.
Meanwhile, Mayor Cayetano expressed her appreciation for the initiative, highlighting the importance of reliable flood information in helping local governments strengthen preparedness and better protect communities amid the growing challenges posed by climate change.
Taguig City, together with the cities of Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, and the provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, and Bulacan, is among the key areas covered by the KOICA-funded project to enhance FFEWS in the country.
