STRENGTHENING PREPAREDNESS THROUGH SHARED KNOWLEDGE
As part of the observance of the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week (TFAW) this year, DOST-PAGASA welcomed neighboring government offices and institutions for the Kapit-Kaalaman Conversations: Sharing Typhoon and Flood Risk Awareness held on June 15, 2026 at the PAGASA Science Garden.
Representatives from various government agencies and institutions including the Office of the Ombudsman, Philippine Postal Corporation, Quezon City Persons with Disability Affairs Office, Social Security System, Philippine Statistics Authority, Bureau of Internal Revenue, National University East Ortigas, Land Transportation Office, and the Public Attorney’s Office visited the agency.
Anchored on the Filipino value of kapit-kaalaman, sharing of knowledge and mutual support, the activity combined interactive learning conversations with guided tours of PAGASA facilities. The term reflects solidarity and collective learning, where kapit signifies support and assistance, kaalaman means knowledge and understanding, and conversations highlight dialogue and the exchange of insights.
Participants gained a deeper appreciation of PAGASA’s role in disaster risk reduction through discussions on typhoon and flood hazards, weather forecasting, and early warning systems. They were also given an opportunity to visit key operational units and facilities, including the Weather and Flood Forecasting Center, Science Garden Station, and media room, where they learned about the science, technologies, and processes behind PAGASA’s forecasts, warnings, and public information services.
Through initiatives such as Kapit-Kaalaman Conversations, DOST-PAGASA continues to foster a culture of shared responsibility, informed decision-making, and preparedness among neighboring government offices and institutions, contributing to safer and more resilient communities in the face of typhoon and flood risks.
