Empowering Communities Through Typhoon and Flood Risk Awareness
In line with the observance of Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week, DOST-PAGASA, in partnership with the local government of Pasig City and National University-East Ortigas, conducted Maagang Aksyon at Akmang Gawin Ayon sa Panahon (MAAGAP) Awareness Seminar Pasig City to strengthen community preparedness and resilience through science-based information and public engagement.
The activity gathered key stakeholders from Pasig City, including students, educators and administrators, local DRR officers and frontliners, local government leaders, engaged in information, education and communication campaign with PAGASA experts weather, climate, and hydrology experts, as part of the agency’s effort in continuously empowering citizens with the information they need to make timely and informed decisions that protect lives, livelihoods, and properties. The interactive learning session focused on understanding typhoon and flood hazards, interpreting PAGASA warning systems, and adopting appropriate preparedness and response measures. Participants were provided with practical knowledge on how weather disturbances develop, the potential impacts of flooding and severe weather events, and the importance of early action based on official weather advisories and warnings.
Anchored on DOST-PAGASA’s commitment to promoting a culture of preparedness, the lectures served as a platform for knowledge-sharing and risk communication, helping bridge scientific information with community action. Through discussions and open exchanges, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the role of timely and accurate weather information in safeguarding lives, properties, and livelihoods.
By bringing weather and climate knowledge closer to communities, PAGASA continues to empower Filipinos to become proactive partners in disaster risk reduction and resilience-building, ensuring that households and communities are better equipped to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to typhoons and flood-related hazards.
